The Ratchawong

A new boutique hotel brand rooted in Bangkok’ Songwat District

The Ratchawong is an intimate 34-room boutique hotel brought to life by J. M. Friedman Hospitality and offering guests cultural experiences of Bangkok's Songwat District. Mandala Studio developed the hotel's complete visual identity, brand collateral and website, building a brand world for a property positioned not merely as a place to stay, but as a gateway into one of Bangkok's most authentic communities.

The identity's centrepiece is the custom 'R' mark — a letterform engineered as a quiet act of cultural fusion. The character is a visual hybrid of the Thai 'ror rua' (ร) drawn directly from the signage of the nearby Ratchawong Pier and its Roman equivalent ‘R’. The two scripts are resolved into a single, unified monogram expressing a place and a style.

The extended branding continues the layered, immersive character, communicating a philosophy of neighbourhood-first hospitality.

The colour palette follows the same logic of place: hues drawn from specific details observed in and around the area from the weathered pigments of shophouse facades to decorative tile work and wall textures.
